Rainy Day Boxes

Lucas Slack (Christine Shelton's nephew) has asked us to participate in his Duty to God Project. He needs help collecting supplies to make Rainy Day Boxes. These are boxes filled with fun things for the special needs classes in Alvin and Friendswood to use when it rains.  He wants to fill 17 boxes. This is an ambitious project! Lucas will place boxes near each entrance of the Stake Center for our donations, to be picked up each Tuesday and Sunday. He will also accept cash donations, if you so desire. Or if you would like to sponsor a box, the cost will be $25.00. Below are the lists of supplies needed to complete this worthy project. Thank you so much for helping Lucas! What Makes A Home?

Hi Sisters! We have been made aware of a need for home furnishings to help out the missionaries. Apparently the Houston Mission is about to receive an influx of missionaries in November and December (isn't that fabulous news?!) and will need to open some new apartments to house them all. Unfortunately for them, there is not a budget for furnishing these apartments. SO... we have been asked to help in any way we can.
Here is a list of items needed (in good working order):
-twin beds (mattresses, box springs, and bed frames)
-dressers
-night stands
-lamps (floor lamps and study lamps)
-apartment sized kitchen tables
-kitchen chairs
-small couches
-bookcases
-study desks
-working washers and dryers

They also need kitchen items if available (in good working order):
-blenders
-toasters
-sandwich grills
-crock pots
-microwaves
-utensils (knives, forks, spoons)
-pots
-frying pans
-cake pans
-cookie sheets (haha! Maybe they'll make us some cookies!) :)
-serving spoons
-glasses
-plates
-bowls
-measuring spoons/cups
-cutting knives
-spatulas
-peelers
-etc.

Please contact Elder Dunning (the apartment coordinator) if you have items you are able to donate (see contact info below). However, please note that the mission has very limited space for storing materials, so they would be so grateful that, if you have items you can donate (especially of the larger items), you hang on to them until they are needed as they start opening apartments.
And something to think about... I know a lot of us don't just happen to have an extra kitchen table lying around and what not, but if you happen to be going by a garage sale or something and see a nice couch, table, etc. and think it would be enjoyed by these young men and women who are out here serving the Lord, that may be a good way to start accumulating items to help out (but you may want to contact Elder Dunning to see what items they're really in need of before you start buying anything). Just a thought. :)

Peanut Butter, Here We Come!

Alright! We are getting ready for our ward's Peanut Butter Factory assignment that is coming up on September 25th (that's a Friday). This is only available to those who have already signed up, so if you have signed up, don't forget about this great opportunity for not only some service, but some great peanut butter as well! I personally have yet to try this peanut butter, but my husband grew up here and says he loves the church's peanut butter. I'll take his word that it's good. :) Our ward's shift is from 6-10 PM, but we need to be at the factory at 5:30 PM for orientation (see address and map below). If you would like to carpool meet at the church at 4 PM (we'll be leaving a bit early due to rush hour traffic), or you can just meet at the cannery. (Side note: you may want to bring some dinner or a snack to tide you over!)

Each person working at the factory may order a maximum of ONE case of peanut butter for $30 each (we're guessing that there are 12 jars of PB in each case, but don't take our word for it!). :) If a husband and wife are both going to work, each of them may order a case. If you are not able to attend, but would still like to get some peanut butter, you may opt to babysit for someone who IS attending and then share that peanut butter case with them (but you will not be able to order a whole case on your own--unless the person you're babysitting for doesn't want any). In any case, please make sure you have let Robin I. know what you are planning to order.

To pay for your peanut butter, write a check to the ward (just like you would for tithing) for $30 (or $60 if you and your husband are each getting a case), get a tithing slip and write "PB Factory" in the 'Other' section on the slip. Turn it in to a member of the bishopric. Your money needs to be turned in NO LATER THAN Sunday, September 20th. No money by then = no peanut butter. (Responsibility, reshmonsability...) :) You will be able to pick up your peanut butter from the church on Wednesday, September 30th (it has to be tested before you can take it home with you.)

Old Fashioned Quilting Bee

Okay, so we won't be making any quilts from scratch or anything, but don't forget to come and enjoy some sisterly bonding as we tie some quilts for those in need. These will be for babies, children, and people of all ages who are in need of our help.

The fun starts on Wednesday (Sept. 9th) at 7 PM at the church. If you signed up to bring fabric, batting, yarn, etc. you have likely already been contacted by Sis. Carlson. However, if not, please give her a call and see what you need to do.
