2. I regularly have 5 gallons or more of milk in my spare freezer. So when the electricity was void, it did two things. The milk kept things colder for longer in my freezer and my family had MILK~quite a highly sought after commodity. So freeze your milk sisters!
3. Print things from your computer that you rely on such as evacuation plan, emergency information and an evacuation map and phone directory. No power, then no info is available.
4. Store valuables and important papers/insurance information in a plastic bin on a shelf to keep safe and water proof (rain or flood).
5. Back up your computer and if you are evacuating, take back-up with you.
6. Make sure your medication is packed. You might want to include a list and time schedule of meds.
7. If you are evacuating, let someone know where you are heading and how you are getting out, etc…
8. For the pets: Food, water, leash, food and water containers, medications, shot records
Crate for dogs / cats, quiet toys. Nervous or car-sick pets can take Dramamine or Benadryl to settle them. Contact your vet for specifics.
9. Purchase a Battery operated radio.
10. If you are staying home and have a home phone, get an “old school phone” that plugs into the wall and is not cordless. You can use these without power.
11. “Rabbit Ears” for TV, $10-20 but worth it to be able to tune in for updates
12. Car charger for cell phone or other devices
13. If you live in an area that floods easily, keep cinderblocks or bricks on hand to get the furniture, refrigerator, washer / dryer, etc…off the floor.
14. Brazoria County Residents: If you chose to stay home, no services will be available to you while the storm is passing through. This includes the hospital, ambulance service, fire and police
15. Home Preparation: Hurricane clips – Home Depot or Lowes to secure ply wood in your window openings on the outside of your home.
16. Check your trees to make sure there are no broken branches. If there are any, remove them.
